I have a 2005 350Z which has a 6 speed manual. I dont know if they had the same transmission set up for the 97 Maxima, but I have to push down the gear shifter, and while still down push it all the way to the right, then back (towards the rear of the car). Otherwise you most likely have a stripped gear and need to get that looked at or even worked on.
